City pools open in East Valley

Summer is here, evidenced by the arrival of triple-digit temperatures and jubilant kids loosed from schoolhouses. Seek relief from either at the East Valley’s 30 public swimming pools. They offer a much-needed “aaaaaah” this season, most for less than $2 a head. Summer hours and fees are listed below; most pools will change their public swim hours when school starts in mid-August.

Scottsdale

A

Open 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. May 24 through May 26 for open swim. Beginning May 27, open 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday for lap swimming, and 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday for open swim.

Kiwanis Wave Pool, with 3-foot waves tossing swimmers in every conceivable direction, cranks up each summer; it’s the place for violently splashy good fun. If calmer waters are more your thing, try one of the city’s other pools. Good to know:

• Personal flotation devices, such as water rings and life jackets are not permitted, and all children under age 8 must be within arm’s reach of an adult at all times.

• No outside food or drink is allowed, but there is a concession stand inside the facility.

Mesa

Nine pools are open in Mesa this summer (Kino and Rhodes pools are closed for renovations). Four will host the Aqua Climb, a wet version of a rock-climbing wall, for two-week periods this summer. Additionally, most pools offer weekly regular-admission events like obstacle courses and teen parties, and special events, such as “dive-in” movies. For dates and times of these special attractions, check the city’s Splash Calendar, available at each pool or online.
