ASU men’s golf advance to NCAA championships

The Arizona State men’s golf team secured its sixth straight NCAA championship appearance Saturday by finishing eighth at the West Regional in Bremerton, Wash.
The Sun Devils, with a total of 21-over 885 (304-285-296), were led by James Byrne, who finished at 3-over 219 (71-73-76) and tied for 23rd place.
ASU’s Jesper Kennegard shot a 3-under 69 in the final round to finish at 6-over 222, tied for 35th. Braxton Marquez shot a 7-over 223 (77-70-76), Knut Borsheim finished at 13-over 229 (78-72-79) and Stephan Gross shot a 14-over 230 (82-73-75) for the Sun Devils.
The top 10 teams from the regional advance to the NCAA championships, which will be held May 28-31 in West Lafayette, Ind.
USC won the regional with a score of 2-under 862. Oregon was second, followed by Clemson, Washington, UCLA, Stanford, St. Mary’s (Calif.), Texas and San Diego State.
Oregon’s Joey Benedetti was the individual medalist at 2-under 207.
