Chandler official cited in woman’s assault
Eddi Trevizo, Tribune
A Chandler city official was arrested on suspicion of assault over the weekend, according to authorities. Richard K. Mulligan, economic director for Chandler, was arrested Sunday outside his home in connection with a dispute and assault involving a woman, a city official said.
Chandler Councilman Jeff Weninger said in a phone interview with the Tribune Tuesday night the charges against Mulligan are “alarming — if true.”
“I’m going to reserve judgement until more details come out,” said Weninger when asked about the gravity of Mulligan’s suspected actions.
He declined to comment further, saying he was unaware of what, if any, charges Mulligan is facing.
Chandler police refused to comment about the case late Tuesday.
Weniger added that he knew Mulligan well, and that he viewed him as a polite and mild-mannered person.
Mulligan, on administrative leave, was not booked into jail, but will have to appear in Chandler City Court on June 18. Mulligan could not be reached for comment late Tuesday. No further details were available regarding the incident.
Mulligan, reached at his home Wednesday, had no comment.
