Eight runs of support is plenty for Brandon Webb. The only drama left to unfold in the ninth inning on Thursday was whether Webb would actually finish what he started.

The Phillies touched the Arizona right-hander for a pair of runs in the ninth, but he started a game-ending double play immediately after a meeting on the mound with manager Bob Melvin as Arizona won 8-3 at Chase Field.

Melvin told Webb he had one batter left before he got taken out of the game.

“I told him he’s got one here to get two outs,” Melvin said. “If you want to stay out here and go 8 2/3 (innings) that’s fine, but you’d better go out and get a double-play ball if you want to end this game.”

Catcher Chris Snyder was the one who lobbied hard for Webb to stay in the ballgame. Melvin called it begging.

“I don’t know if I was begging,” Snyder said. “I wanted him to get (the complete game). OK, I’ll agree with Bo-Mel. I was begging.”

Webb is now 8-0 with a 2.41 ERA after allowing two earned runs and six hits. He is the first pitcher to win his first eight starts since Jon Garland did so for the Chicago White Sox in 2005, and the first NL pitcher to do so since Pedro Martinez in 1997 with Montreal.

Justin Upton and Chris Young both homered for the D-Backs, who split the four-game set with Philadelphia. Mark Reynolds went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Snyder hit a two-run double.
