2 teens arrested in attack on Mormon youths

Mike Branom, Tribune

Two Gilbert teens were arrested over the weekend in the attack of another pair of teens after asking whether they were Mormon, according to a police report released Monday.

When the victims, sitting in a park near Elliot and McQueen roads, answered that they were Mormon, the teenage suspects first shot at them with a pellet gun and then attacked them physically and verbally, according to the police report.

During the incident, which occurred Saturday night, the two suspects made anti-Mormon statements, authorities said.

A 15-year-old victim was taken to a hospital for treatment of facial injuries.

The suspects were booked into the Maricopa County Juvenile Detention Facility on suspicion of aggravated assault, disorderly conduct and consumption of alcohol under the age of 21, according to the report.

One of them was also booked on suspicion of operating a vehicle after consuming alcohol while under the age of 21.

The suspects had carved swastikas into their skin on the inside of their wrists, police said.
