D-Backs notebook: Matchup offers chance at another gem

Jack Magruder, Tribune

The first and only time Dan Haren faced Johan Santana, they combined for the best-pitched game in the major leagues in 2005, on Aug. 12 in Oakland.

Haren, with the Athletics, threw a complete-game three-hitter, gave up one run … and lost, 1-0, when Minnesota scored on a walk, a stolen base and Michael Cuddyer’s fifth-inning single to right field.

“That was cool. I hope it happens again. We’ll see how it goes tomorrow,” said Santana, who will oppose Haren again today after the two premier pitchers available in the offseason changed leagues.

Santana threw a three-hit shutout for Minnesota, striking out nine and walking one, throwing 80 strikes in 110 pitches.

Haren struck out four, walked two and threw 75 strikes among 113 pitches.

Santana had a game score of 89 using a scale developed by baseball sabermetrician Bill James. Haren’s game score was 79.

The second-best combined game score that season came when then-Yankee Randy Johnson (81) beat Boston’s Tim Wakefield (83), 1-0, on Sept. 11.

INJURY NOT SERIOUS

While the Diamondbacks may be without Orlando Hudson again today, they were relieved to learn that the hamstring injury that forced him out of Friday night’s game does not appear to be serious.

Hudson suffered a tight right hamstring muscle, “not even a strain,” manager Bob Melvin said, and has a decent chance to play the final game of the Mets’ series.

Fears were raised when Hudson beckoned to the dugout immediately after feeling the injury while running out a double in the fifth inning of a 7-2 loss Friday.

“Usually it takes quite a bit for him to come out of a game. For him to call me out there and come out of a game was a bit of a concern, but he was just being smart,” Melvin said.

“He didn’t want to jeopardize pulling a hamstring, which in turn could keep him out for a while.”

DAVIS SET FOR REHAB

Doug Davis will pitch a simulated game Monday at Chase Field, Melvin said, after which the rest of his rehab schedule will be determined.

Davis said Friday he hoped to make only two rehab starts, but the D-Backs may want him to take a third.

By working Monday, Davis will be on the same day as Max Scherzer, who will make his first major league start against Philadelphia that night.

Davis will move into the rotation when ready, the D-Backs have said, and Scherzer would seem the odd man out, but the D-Backs will commit to nothing until that time arrives.

“It’ll have to do with Davis. I don’t want to forecast too far out. A lot of times, things take care of themselves,” Melvin said.

SHORT HOPS

Chad Tracy has played third base and base in extended spring training and is expected to join Triple-A Tucson on Tuesday, when the Sidewinders open an eight-game homestand. The D-Backs would like to see Tracy get 30 to 40 minor league at-bats before considering activating him.

Cincinnati’s Edinson Volquez (4-1, 1.27 ERA), San Francisco’s Tim Lincecum (4-1, 1.73) and Milwaukee’s Ben Sheets (4-0, 1.64) received votes behind Webb for the NL Pitcher of the Month award.
