PHOENIX - Phoenix police believe a murdered junior college football player exchanged gunfire with his assailant or assailants before losing his life.
Police said they are looking for at least one shooter in the killing this past weekend of Phoenix College football running back Corrdero Alniel Drummond.
Police received a 911 call around 11:30 p.m. Sunday reporting gunshots near the campus, said Sgt. Joel Tranter, a Phoenix police spokesman.
Friends of the victim found Drummond in the doorway of his house, Tranter said.
Officers arrived and performed CPR, but Drummond died at the scene after having been shot in the back Tranter said.
Police said the shooting was not random and that there may have been more than one shooter.
Police are investigating whether there had been other illegal activities, including drugs at the house, Tranter said.
Drummond was living with roommates and was evicted last weekend, the roommates having recently moved out of the home.
Drummond's death marks the second Phoenix College football player to be killed in recent weeks. Freshman safety Derrius Walton, 20, was shot and killed in the parking lot of a Scottsdale nightclub in March. Welton Armstead, 24, was arrested in the killing.
Police would not say whether the two shootings were related.
The college expressed sympathy for the victim.
"The entire Phoenix College community is saddened by the sudden and senseless death of one of our former students, Corrdero Drummond," said Michelle Klinger, public-relations coordinator for Phoenix College.
"He had many friends on campus. On behalf of our students, faculty, and staff, we extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of this young man."
