Dunkin’ Donuts taking bigger bite of the Valley

Dunkin’ Donuts will have a much larger presence in the Valley with what it says will be 150 locations opening over several years.
While the exact time frame during which the stores will open is unclear, company officials partnered with three franchisees and plan to roll out 18 of the shops by the end of the year as part of a national expansion plan.
“We’ll start opening stores within the next three or four months,” said Grant Benson, vice president of franchise sales.
Six of those openings will be remodeled stores. Dunkin’ Donuts stores around the Valley closed earlier this year for remodeling as part of a plan to modernize the facilities, improve quality of service and expand the menu.
Benson said key target areas for the company’s expansion will be those with the most population growth, but he would not specify locations.
Dunkin’ Donuts started 57 years ago. The company sells doughnuts, bagels and coffee.
But officials nowadays are focusing more on the specialty coffee beverage market and see the chain as more akin to Starbucks than a Krispy Kreme Doughnuts or Winchell’s Donut House, Benson said.
“We’ve introduced a lot of new products that weren’t initially a significant portion of the brand,” he said. “The lattes and the espressos and cappuccinos certainly, but also the iced coffee. We are much more skewed toward a beverage base at this point in time than in the past, where it was primarily baked goods.”
