After a dozen years with Herb Sendek, Mark Phelps might get his first chance to run a college basketball team.
Phelps, Arizona State's top assistant, is expected to be named the head coach at Drake early this week, a source familiar with the situation told the Tribune on Sunday.
Phone messages left for Phelps were not immediately returned.
Phelps would replace Keno Davis, who was named the Associated Press Coach of the Year after the Bulldogs won the Missouri Valley Conference and reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1971. Davis left the school last week to become the new Providence coach.Phelps was an assistant with Sendek for 10 years at North Carolina State, then came to ASU when Sendek was hired two years ago.
Phelps was also a successful high school in Virginia, and has recruiting ties to the Midwest and East Coast.
ASU director of basketball operations Mike Gibson would likely join Phelps as an assistant at Drake.
