Phoenix Suns center Shaquille O’Neal has signed up to become a volunteer with the Tempe Police Department.
“O’Neal came in here last Thursday to apply to be a volunteer,” Tempe police spokeswoman Sgt. Cindy Davies said.
The Suns regular season will end next month, and Davies said O’Neal would most likely begin volunteer duties then.
Before coming to Phoenix, O’Neal was a reserve officer for the Miami Beach Police Department when he played for the Miami Heat. When he played for the Los Angeles Lakers, he also volunteered with the L.A. Port Police.
In January 2006, O'Neal toured Tent City with Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio and was sworn in as a reserve deputy. At the time, he said wanted to be a sheriff after his basketball career.
Davies said she is unaware of what type of duties O’Neal will be given.
“It all depends on what the department needs at that time,” Davies said.
