Sendek bypassed in voting for Pac-10 Coach of year
From Staff Reports
In a vote that surprised many on the Arizona State campus, Stanford’s Trent Johnson was named the Pac-10 coach of the year in voting by the league’s coaches on Monday.
ASU’s Harden named to All-Pac-10 first teamJohnson led Stanford, a perennial Pac-10 power, to a second-place finish in the Pac-10 with a conference record of 13-5 and an overall mark of 24-6. It is Stanford’s best league mark since posting a 17-1 record to capture the league title in 2003-04, the year before Johnson arrived at the school.
ASU coach Herb Sendek was considered a strong contender for the award after taking an ASU team that finished 8-22 last season (2-16 in the Pac-10) and putting it on the verge of an NCAA tournament bid. The Sun Devils, who were picked to finish ninth in the conference before the season began, instead placed fifth with a 9-9 Pac-10 record while going 19-9 overall.
ASU accomplished the turnaround despite relying on a freshman-laden team that saw first-year players account for more than 50 percent of the minutes played. James Harden and Ty Abbott played more minutes than any freshmen in ASU history with 35.9 and 34.8 minutes per game, respectively.
