Valley freeways proved dangerous and deadly for pedestrians Thursday night when one person was fatally struck and another severely injured in separate incidents, authorities said.
Arizona Department of Public Safety officers responded to calls involving pedestrians being struck on U.S. 60 and Interstate 10.
A young woman attempting to cross U.S. 60 west of Goldfield Road in Apache Junction was killed about 7 p.m., DPS said. The freeway was closed at Tomahawk Road and reopened at 9:50 p.m., DPS said.
The woman was with three other teens at the time, DPS said. Officers were unsure as to why the four attempted to cross the freeway.
In the other incident, authorities said traffic was backed up from I-10 and Seventh Street in Phoenix after a man was struck at 8:49 p.m. while attempting to cross the freeway.
They said the victim was severely injured and taken to a nearby hospital.
Officers did not know why the man attempted to cross the freeway, and an investigation was still pending late Thursday night.
I-10 was completely reopened by 9:20 p.m., DPS said.
No further information was available in either incident, and authorities did not release the victims' names.
