State education panel revises classroom math standards

The state Department of Education has created new math standards for Arizona classrooms, and is now asking for community input.

A committee including more than 65 Arizona math teachers was involved in revising the standard for what - and how - math should be taught.

The standards were last revised in 2003. The committee used those standards and determined which items needed updating, which could remain as they were and which could be eliminated.

Currently, math standards only go through the 10th grade. But now, the Department of Education is including a new category called "college/work readiness," which include standards like "graph polynomial functions" and "apply probability concepts ... to make informed decisions in practical situations."

According to documents from the State Board of Education, university professors shared input for these standards. To revise them, the committee also used resources from the American Diploma Project and the National Assessment of Educational Progress test.

The department will hold five public hearings about the new standards during March, including one in Mesa on Tuesday.

The standards are listed, by grade level, on the department of education's Web site at www.ade.state.az.us/SA/sdi/MathArticulated.

All feedback is due by March 28.
