TUCSON – Diamondbacks catcher Miguel Montero was sent to the Valley for a CAT scan on his fractured right index finger Friday morning.
Montero suffered the injury in winter ball in December and has been slow to recover.
He has not taken batting practice as camp finished its second week Friday, and his finger was puffy and red after he took soft-toss Wednesday.
“Maybe it hasn’t healed as quickly as we would like, but we still have some time,” D-Backs manager Bob Melvin said. “I wouldn’t argue with the fact that it is a little frustrating in that we thought he’d be farther along right now.”
Montero and Chad Tracy (knee) have yet to take part in full drills, but Melvin said he has not ruled either out for opening day March 31.
“If we got bad news today, then maybe (Montero) would be in a little more jeopardy. But let’s see how that can scan is today,” Melvin said.
“At this point, I still have ‘Trace’ potentially for opening day. I couldn’t say I would rule out ‘Miggy’ right now.”
