TUCSON - It’s only rock and roll, but Randy Johnson likes it.
Johnson found a novel way to break the tedium of spring training – he flew to New York City to attend a concert featuring rock icons Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood after his workout Tuesday.

D-Backs notebook: Randy Johnson back on mound
Johnson put in his normal work day Tuesday, playing catch in the D-Backs’ camp, before taking a private jet to New York for the concert at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night.
He slept on the return flight and was back in camp on time Wednesday, playing long toss and doing his normal conditioning work.
“He had it planned, and it hasn’t affected anything he’s done here,” D-Backs manager Bob Melvin said.
“I’m sure it was a heck of a concert. I wish he’d let me know – I’d have gone with him.”
Johnson missed several D-Backs’ flights last season as a concession to his back trouble, but Melvin did not consider this flight an issue.
“Especially when you are in a private plane, when you have as much room as you need,” Melvin said.
An avid rock music aficionado and collector, Johnson flew to London in the offseason to attend a Led Zeppelin concert.
