The Suns expect to hear from free-agent guard Brent Barry early today regarding Barry’s choice of teams, an NBA source said Monday.
Barry was expected to meet with his family Monday in his San Antonio home and decide which offer to accept. It is believed that the Suns and Spurs are the leading contenders, but Houston and Boston are also in the mix.
None of the four teams is expected to give more than a prorated portion of the veterans’ minimum ($1.2 million) to the 3-point specialist.
Barry had his $5.6 million contract bought out by the SuperSonics last week after being dealt to Seattle from San Antonio in the Kurt Thomas deal.
Barry, who would be a valuable playmaker and help the Suns’ spacing by preventing opponents from packing defenders inside, is averaging 7.3 points this season on 43 percent shooting from 3-point range.
He hasn’t played since Jan. 24 due to a calf strain.
Over his 13-year career, the 6-foot-7 son of NBA great Rick Barry has averaged 9.7 points on 46.1 percent shooting, 3.3 assists and 3.1 rebounds.
Barry won NBA titles with the Spurs in 2005 and ’07.
