A collision involving five all-terrain vehicles near Saguaro Lake Sunday afternoon left one man dead, authorities said.

The driver of the ATV was identified as Jaime Tapia, 40, of Gilbert.

Matteson said the incident took place about 5:30 p.m. at the Butcher Jones recreation area near the lake.

Five men were riding on ATVs when two of the vehicles collided killing one of the drivers, Matteson said. He said the other three ATVs also crashed into the wreckage. The other drivers were not seriously injured, he said.

The accident was reported to authorities by an off-duty Gilbert policeman who used a radio he had with him in the secluded area, Matteson said. Due to the remote location, cell phone coverage at Butcher Jones is limited, he said.

The area is known to attract ATV enthusiasts. The long, winding and narrow lake is the closest lake to the Valley, at only 41 miles from downtown Phoenix.

An investigation into the accident is ongoing, Matteson said.
