Flagstaff activist changes name to FishingHurts

Julie Wlodychak, For the Tribune

An animal rights activist in Flagstaff is picking up a new driver's license today from the Motor Vehicle Division that shows her new name.

Rachel Feather did not get married or divorced. Instead, she made the name change to reflect her concern for animals.

She is now called Rachel FishingHurts.

Fishinghurts, 21, became a vegetarian at 13 and chose to advocate for fish because they are the “forgotten animal,” according to a prepared statement from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

She chose this name to bring awareness to PETA’s anti-fishing Web site that serves as a “living memorial for millions of fish and sea animals who are killed for food or sport,” said PETA spokeswoman Lindsay Rajt.

“Rachel has made a compassionate decision to change her name so that everyone she comes in contact with will understand that fish can feel pain just like dogs, chickens and pigs,” Rajt said.

PETA's fishinghurts.com site reinforces this message. “Fish may not be cute and cuddly like puppies and kittens, but they suffer and experience pain in very much the same way,” the Web site says.

The site also contains information about how fish are caught and killed, how fish think and feel, and how to become a vegetarian.

“We encourage people to visit fishinghurts.com,” Rajt said.

PETA is an international nonprofit organization based in Norfolk, Va., dedicated to establishing and defending the rights of all animals.
