Police say a disagreement between a Gilbert school bus driver and a high school student led to a physical altercation Friday.
The confrontation happened just before 3 p.m., when a student at Williams Field High School, in the Higley Unified School District, demanded to get off the bus and the bus driver refused, Gilbert police Lt. Eric Shuhandler said. Names of the student and the driver, both female, were not released.
Police had not determined whether the student demanded to be released at an authorized stop. Once the altercation began, Shuhandler said, two other students attempted to control the fight and others exited the bus through an emergency exit.
“One student jumped in to defend the girl, and the other tried to defend the driver,” said Shuhandler.
Police said the bus driver is in her 50s, and that the student is 15 or 16.
No substantial injuries were reported, and no arrests have been made, Shuhandler said. Police planned to review surveillance footage and interview students on the bus who saw the fight.
Williams Field High School representatives could not be reached for comment late Friday night.
