Cards, Warner’s agent at odds over bonuses
Mike Tulumello, Tribune
The agent for Kurt Warner would like the Cardinals to award a $500,000 bonus that Warner just missed statistically last season.
But it doesn’t look like he’s going to get it.
Warner’s contract called for him to get a series of $500,000 bonuses, up to $1.5 million. He had four categories to reach, and he made two of them, good for $1 million.
He just missed in the other two: finishing in the NFL’s top 10 in passing yards and finishing with a passer rating of 90.0 (he ended up at 89.9)
“We’re hoping to get it resolved,” Warner’s agent, Mark Bartelstein said.
But Cardinals general manager Rod Graves said he doesn’t want to set a precedent by awarding Warner the $500,000.
“We’re proud of everything that Kurt has accomplished. But we’re focused on abiding by the contract. There are other areas where we’re pressed into using our resources,” he said.
ROLLE TO SAFETY
As expected, Antrel Rolle will move from cornerback to safety.
“That’s the general plan,” Graves said.
The move not only would seem to fit Rolle’s skill set, there could be an opening at safety as the Cardinals have to make a decision on Terrence Holt. Holt is due a $1.5 million roster bonus on March 13th. The Cardinals could well cut him.
“I’m going on the premise he’ll be back,” Holt’s agent, Gregory Williams said. “I haven’t heard anything to the contrary.”
LEINART ALL FOOTBALL
Nothing is wrong with Matt Leinart’s knees.
“Zero,” says Chuck Price, Leinart’s agent, refuting rumors that the Cardinals’ quarterback was about to visit Dr. James Andrews, the renowned sports doctor in Birmingham, Ala, for a look at a sore knee.
Actually, Price said, another of his Cardinal clients, offensive lineman Elton Brown, is going to visit Andrews for a sore knee.
“But nothing is wrong with Matt,” he said.
Leinart wears a brace for practices and games, but not off the field, he said.
Price acknowledged that Leinart suffered from distractions last season, including speculation about his personal life.
At training camp, Leinart was the focus of media reports about his custody agreement with his former girlfriend, Brynn Cameron, over their son Cole.
After he got off to a sluggish start, Leinart complained about having to split time with Kurt Warner. When his comments surfaced publicly, he backed off.
Then, in October, he went down for the season with a broken clavicle in his throwing shoulder.
“The personal distractions in his life got the best of him,” Price said.
Now, Leinart is ready to go, physically and mentally.
Leinart is working out extensively and is throwing the football.
“His shoulder isn’t 100 percent, but it will be,” Price said. “He’s got a 100 percent clean bill of health.”
