Students at Chaparral High School who were evacuated due to a construction accident that caused the rupture of a 1-inch gas line on school grounds this morning have returned to class, Scottsdale police said.
Gas line break forces Chaparral High evacuation
The gas line was ruptured about 9:45 a.m., and students were evacuated to the football and softball fields for about 45 minutes as the Scottsdale Fire Department and Southwest Gas investigated the incident.
Motorists traveling near the school, at 6935 E. Gold Dust Ave., briefly were affected and were detoured around the school, police said.
Chaparral is in the middle of a $52 million renovation project scheduled to be completed in July 2009.
This morning’s incident marked the second time this school year Chaparral was evacuated for a suspected gas leak. The school was evacuated in September because a teacher thought she smelled gas in the air, but that incident turned out to be a false alarm.
There were no injuries reported from this morning’s incident, according to police.
