The stay was short, but sweet. After two weeks of hanging among the nation’s Top 25, the Arizona State men’s basketball team was bounced out of this week’s rankings.
Sun Devils fall short vs. No. 6 Cougars
A precipitous drop was a foregone conclusion following last week’s sweep at the hands of Washington and Washington State. The Sun Devils (14-5, 4-3 Pac-10) received 16 votes in Monday’s Associated Press poll and five votes in the ESPN/USA Today coaches poll.
ASU has lost three consecutive games heading into this week’s trip to UCLA and USC.
The Sun Devils were ranked No. 24 in last week’s AP poll and the leading school among “others receiving votes” in the coaches poll.
Among Pac-10 schools, UCLA (No. 5) is ranked the same in both polls this week, as is Washington State (No. 9) and Stanford (No. 14).
Arizona received the most votes among non-Top 25 teams in the coaches poll and was third in the AP poll behind Mississippi State and Connecticut. USC and ASU were the other Pac-10 schools to receive votes in either poll.
ASU freshman James Harden is one of 30 candidates for the John Wooden Award given to the nation’s best player. The youngest player in the Pac-10, Harden is averaging 18.8 points and 1.9 steals per game. He has scored at least 20 points in 10 games and is the only player in the Pac-10 to lead his team in scoring in each conference game.
The Pac-10 had seven players on the list, the most from any conference.
