More people, less cars and money at Barrett-Jackson

Buyers anted up a combined $88 million for 1,163 cars at the annual auto extravaganza that wrapped up Sunday at WestWorld in Scottsdale, about $24 million less than they paid for pricey ‘Cudas, Camaros and Shelby Cobras in January, 2007.
There were about 100 fewer cars crossing the block than a year earlier, and no $5.5 million vehicles like the Shelby SuperSnake that set an auction price record in 2007.
But a record 280,000 car-lovers came to gawk at such attractions as the mechanical car-mangling Robosaurus, the one-of-a-kind Rondine, a concept Corvette hand-crafted for the 1963 Paris Auto Show, and a smattering of celebrities from Jay Leno to Patrick Dempsey.
“Our record attendance and Web site hits, as well as the prices for crown jewel cars were very strong with three cars hitting at least $1 million,” Barrett-Jackson chairman Craig Jackson said in a prepared statement announcing the results. “There were also some good values and a few surprises this year. As the prices indicated, the bids for the vehicles were fair, pleasing both consignors and buyers.”
