A baby otter born Oct. 3 at the Phoenix Zoo greeted the public Friday.

MaKena is a spotted neck otter who lives at the zoo with her parents and older brother born last year. Her name means “happy one” in Swahili.

Spotted neck otters are abundant in the lakes, swamps and rivers of central Africa. They live about 20 years and eat fish, frogs, crabs, molluscs and aquatic insects.

Zoo spokeswoman Aimee Yamamori said MaKena has already showed an independent spirit

“This baby spends a lot more time on her own than her older brother,” Yamamori said.

She said the Phoenix Zoo is one of only seven zoos in the world that display spotted neck otters.
