Limelight faces another patent lawsuit
Comments | RecommendEd Taylor, Tribune
Limelight Networks, the Tempe-based company that delivers video, music, games and other content over the Internet, is the target of a second patent-infringement lawsuit.
Level 3 Communications, a Broomfield, Colo.-based company that provides similar content-delivery services, filed the suit Dec. 17 in U.S. District Court in Norfolk, Va. The company alleges that Limelight is infringing on four patents that Level 3 inherited when it acquired the content-delivery business of Savvis Communications in January.
On Monday, Limelight responded to the allegations, saying they were “without merit” and that the company would “defend itself vigorously.”
In a written statement, the company said, “Limelight Networks confirms that it respects the intellectual property rights of others and does not knowingly make use of any third-party intellectual property without consent or authorization.”
The new suit follows the June 2006 patent-infringement suit filed against Limelight by Akamai Technologies and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In that suit, the plaintiffs said Limelight’s technology was infringing on two patents that were issued to MIT and licensed to Akamai, charges Limelight denied.
That case is scheduled to go to trial Feb. 11 in Boston.
