About 345 real estate agents found out over the weekend that Gilbert-based RE/MAX 2000 has shut down and they will have to find other brokers to work with.

Robert Kline, owner of RE/MAX 2000, and Dax Watson, his attorney, wouldn’t comment on the closing Monday. Gordon Baker and Bruce Fraser, two RE/MAX 2000 agents in Gilbert, said they have been flooded with offers from other brokers since learning of the closure.

“As agents, we are independent contractors,” said Baker, who has been with RE/MAX 2000 for five years. “I’ve probably had 10 e-mails from other brokers ... and probably three or four phone calls and one text message. There are many brokerages out there that would like to have real estate agents as part of their brokerages.”

There were 345 real estate agents and about 20 employees with RE/MAX 2000, he said.

According to the brokerage’s Web site, Kline opened his first office in Gilbert in 2000 and has “attracted over 300 of the Valley’s top producers in seven locations throughout the East valley and Phoenix, making RE/MAX 2000 one of the largest offices in the RE/MAX organization.”

No clients will be affected by the closing, and all current listings and sales will progress normally, Fraser said.

Baker said news of the closing came as a surprise. He wouldn’t comment on what prompted the closing.

“I don’t spend a lot of time in the office,” he said.

As for why the office closed, Fraser said “In the changing real estate environment, the business is no longer making a profit.”
