Cyclist dies after head-on collision

A bicyclist died Friday morning after he rode diagonal on a Mesa street and collided head-on with a sport utility vehicle.
Police have not released the bicyclist’s name, but said he appears to be a man in his 20s.
Mesa police spokesman Detective Steve Berry said the bicyclist was heading east on Southern Avenue between Mesa Drive and Center Street about 5:30 a.m. when he tried to switch from the north side of the street to the south side and collided head-on with the SUV.
Police said the driver has not been cited and did not show signs of intoxication.
Also, police said excessive speed was not a factor.
