ASU linebacker Wooten suspended for Holiday Bowl

Arizona State middle linebacker Morris Wooten will not play in the Holiday Bowl on Dec. 27 after committing an unspecified team rules violation.

An athletic department spokesman said on Wednesday that Wooten, a junior who has started eight games this season, is not in academic trouble, nor has he run afoul of the law.

Sophomore Mike Nixon will start in the middle in the bowl game against Texas, backed up by sophomore Gerald Munns.

Travis Goethel (strong side) and Robert James (weak) are the other starting linebackers, with Ryan McFoy, Jeff Bereuter and perhaps Jamarr Robinson providing backup help.

The 6-foot-1, 237-pound Wooten, a transfer from Glendale Community College, is sixth on the team with 47 tackles.

He has been playing through a thumb injury suffered in October.

RECRUITING

ASU on Wednesday received a commitment from defensive tackle Lawrence Guy of Las Vegas Western High, according to Internet recruiting services.

The 6-5, 240-pound Guy recorded 120 tackles and 20 sacks at Western this past season and is rated among the top five nationally at his position.

He is projected as a defensive end in college.

The Sun Devils have 16 known commitments.

Cornerback Terell Carr of Pasadena (Calif.) City College faxed a letter of intent on Wednesday, the first day of the signing period for mid-year transfers.

Carr will participate in spring practice.
