About 100 family members and friends of Alexander Ahmad gathered Saturday night in Scottsdale to thank the community for its support following a fatal head-on collision earlier this week.

Ahmad, 24, was an innocent victim in Wednesday’s head-on crash in the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community. Police said the collision was caused intentionally by a man fleeing from officers after a Tempe bank robbery.

“Our family has experienced an incredible loss,” said Ahmad’s oldest sister, Jennifer Corbett, who read a prepared statement on behalf of the family. “Alex was an amazing son, brother, uncle and friend. We will miss his warmth, his humor, his sometimes goofy nature, his humanity, his sincerity and, most of all, his wonderful smile.”

Corbett spoke outside the family’s Scottsdale home near Camelback and Hayden roads. Family members and friends crowded around as she read the statement. Many wore black. Others cried, falling into the arms of loved ones.

“He was loved by so many, not only by his family and friends, but also by the community,” Corbett said. “We have read every letter, every comment on his Internet guest book, his MySpace page, and we are so grateful for the support and love that has been sent to us during this time.”

Ahmad was a 2002 Saguaro High School graduate. He and twin sister Sara were part of a group honored in 2002 by President Bush and Laura Bush for raising $12,005 to aid war-torn Afghanistan. Ahmad’s father fled the country in 1973 when the Russians invaded.

Both siblings met the president and first lady and posed for a picture.

Ahmad’s funeral will be 11 a.m. today at Scottsdale’s Messinger Mortuary with burial at Paradise Memorial Garden.

Donations can be made to the family to assist with costs associated with his death at any Bank of America branch. The account is titled Alex Ahmad, No. 457008523763.
