Gilbert resident Vicky Lisa isn’t surprised Labrador retrievers are top dog in her town. Lisa describes her 6-month-old black Lab named Cargo as an “all-around great dog.”

Current licensing data from Maricopa County Animal Care and Control shows that Labrador retrievers are the top breed for both Gilbert and Queen Creek with German shepherds coming in second in both towns.

Lisa’s energetic puppy, who has an affinity for eating socks and traveling, was one of several Labradors at Gilbert’s popular dog park, Cosmo Park, on a recent weekday afternoon.

“As my first dog, I knew Labs were the way to go,” she said. “They’re easy to train and really outgoing.”

Lisa said she also sees lots of Labs come to her workplace, the Born To Run dog activity center in Gilbert.

There are 1,859 Labrador retrievers registered in Gilbert and 356 in Queen Creek.

Rounding out the top five in Gilbert are golden retrievers, Shih Tzus and beagles. In Queen Creek, Australian shepherds, golden retrievers and Chihuahuas finish out the top five.

“Labrador retrievers are the most popular dog in the Valley, just because of their great disposition,” Animal Care and Control spokeswoman Aprille Hollis said. “They are very family friendly, they’re very loving dogs.”

Hollis said Gilbert and Queen Creek’s top five are also “pretty true to form across the Valley.”

“These are the currently licensed numbers,” she said. “We have no way to track the dogs that haven’t been licensed.”

Gilbert resident Diana Sparks brought her German shepherd and golden retriever to Cosmo Park this past week. She was also not surprised her breeds made the top five.

“We’ve had German shepherds in the past, and I’ve always thought golden retrievers were nice dogs,” Sparks said. “We see how many there are out here.”

There are 14,058 dogs registered in Gilbert and 2,541 in Queen Creek.
