Cardinals cornerback Antrel Rolle has been named NFC defensive player of the week after intercepting three passes – and returning two for touchdowns -- in Sunday’s 35-27 victory at the Cincinnati Bengals.
Rolle returned an interception in the first quarter 55 yards for a touchdown, and scored a second time in the third quarter on a 54-yard interception return. He got a third interception in the fourth quarter and also returned that into the end zone, but the return was called back due to a Cardinals penalty.
Rolle would have become the first player in NFL history to return three interceptions for touchdowns in one game. As it is, he is still the 24th player in NFL history, and fifth player in team history, to return two interceptions for touchdowns.
Rolle also became the first Cardinals player to collect three interceptions since strong safety Adrian Wilson recorded three vs. Dallas on Oct. 20, 2002. Rolle’s 127 total return yards also broke the franchise single-game record of 115 set by Larry Wilson on Dec. 19, 1965.
Rolle is the third Cardinals defensive player and the second in consecutive weeks to win the award this season. Linebacker Karlos Dansby won last week after the Cardinals’ victory over the Detroit Lions and cornerback Rod Hood was honored following the team’s Week 5 victory at St. Louis.
