Charting Kelly Clarkson’s highs and lows

Kelly Clarkson, who on Tuesday brings her My December tour to Tempe, has certainly seen her share of ups and downs — ballooning weight, feuding with her record label and a critically panned third album — since being crowned “American Idol.” (Thankfully, she never hit Britney low!)

Clarkson beats out curly-haired Justin Guarini and is crowned “American Idol” on the first season of the Fox reality singing competition. Rumors surface that Guarini and Clarkson are dating but are never proven.

Clarkson releases debut disc “Thankful” on RCA Records. “American Idol” tries to capitalize on Clarkson’s success by releasing, “From Justin to Kelly,” a romantic musical film starring Clarkson and Guarini, which bombs.

Clarkson brings on the rock with her sophomore album, “Breakaway,” which features the hit singles “Breakaway,” “Since U Been Gone,” “Behind These Hazel Eyes” and “Because of You.”

Clarkson wins two Grammys — one for best pop vocal album for “Breakaway” and another for best female pop vocal performance for “Since U Been Gone.” The singer thanks everyone but Fox or “American Idol.”

Reports surface that RCA music mogul Clive Davis wants to shelve Clarkson’s third album, “My December,” but Clarkson isn’t having it since she took part in the writing process on the tracks on the new disc.

“My December” is panned by critics despite selling more than 16 million albums worldwide. The singer cancels her upcoming tour two days after parting ways with her manager. A statement released by her new representative acknowledges ticket sales have been slow.

The singer makes amends with record label and Davis. “I want to set the record straight on this by saying that I want my band, my advisors, those close to me and my record label to be one big, tightly knit family,” the 25-year-old singer says. “Like any family we will disagree and argue sometimes but, in the end, it’s respect and admiration that will keep us together.”

Clarkson kicks off smaller-scale tour — to be held in 3,000- to 6,000-seat theaters.

Kelly Clarkson performs 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 20 at ASU’s Gammage Auditorium, Apache Boulevard and Mill Avenue, Tempe. $37.(480) 965-3434 or kellyclarkson.com.
