Protégés of Wright converge upon architect’s landmark

The first group of Frank Lloyd Wright’s apprentices reported for duty at Taliesin, Wright’s Spring Green, Wis., home, in 1932.
Now, 75 years later, a multitude of the iconic architect’s former proteges, as well as faculty and student alumni, are converging upon Taliesin West — Wright’s longtime winter home and studio in Scottsdale.
The gathering today and Saturday is intended to celebrate Wright’s legacy and the future of the architectural program that bears his name.
“We’ll be able to share that love of an idea and see it in its wide variety of expressions,” Victor Sidy, dean of the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture, said of the experiences Wright’s apprentices have taken from the architect’s tutelage and how Wright’s ideas have endured.
Visitors to Taliesin West this weekend will also have a chance to explore Wright’s mystique.
In addition to today’s public symposium that takes a look at the future of architecture, visitors will have a chance to meet a number of notable Taliesin alumni at book signings, including Bruce Brooks Pfeiffer, director of the Frank Lloyd Wright archives; architect John Rattenbury, an apprentice who worked with Wright on the Guggenheim museum in New York City; architect Cornelia Brierly, one of Wright’s earliest apprentices; and local treasure architect Paolo Soleri.
Other highlights include a desert shelter tour of Taliesin student dwellings Saturday afternoon and a historical timeline exhibit that includes the names of more than 2,200 people associated with Taliesin and Taliesin West and marks notable events in Wright’s career.
This weekend’s reunion is expected to draw some 300 special guests to Taliesin West — 50 of whom are former apprentices of Wright.
