Man with gun shot dead by Mesa police

A man who displayed a handgun to two Mesa policemen was shot dead by one of the officers early this morning.

Authorities have not released the man's name, pending positive identification and notification of next of kin.

According to authorities, at 12:38 a.m. police received a call from a 51-year-old female living near Power and McKellips roads. The woman reported someone was knocking on her front door, and she believed it to be her ex-boyfriend against whom she has placed an order of protection.

At 12:51 a.m., two officers arrived at the residence. There, the officers contacted a man and he displayed a handgun. When he failed to comply with the officers' commands, one of the policemen fired his duty weapon.

The Mesa Fire Department pronounced the man dead at the scene.

I drove by this last night on the way home from a movie, like 10 or 15 cop cars passed me traveling down Power Road. I am glad I had some closure about what was going on last night.

Strike

yeah, guy was banging on the front door, had a gun, wouldn't drop it, cop shot but it wasn't fatal. The suspect then turned the gun on himself. Shot himself in the head. end of story Comment has been reviewed

There is just too much GOOD about him that is not coming through on this very basic story. before his name comes out, I want to tell you about him. He is not a law Breaker- Before you JUDGE this man- he was a GOOD man. He did not go there to harm.. He was Most likely called to that residence as he had been before-many, many times. This Order of Protection was truly not about any violence, per her own words. This Man respected the Law and Officers. He would help anyone in need...ANYONE, including this woman who repeatedly called him over several times. He was depressed absolutely-over severe pain after a botched surgery which made him lose his job and his livelihood approx. 5-6 years ago, but was still able to laugh and be a wonderful person... Not ever threatened any harm to anyone- especially this woman. I know first hand.. Before you Judge- get the facts- there are ANGUISHED relatives out there. Comment has been reviewed

Good man?? Get the facts??

The only facts I need are: "A man who displayed a handgun to two Mesa policemen was shot dead"

Good ridance. If he was a "good man" why was he responding with a handgun, and then stupid enough to display it to the cops.

He may have had a relationship with a crazy but it was him that responded, with a weapon, and therefore, he got what is deserved.

Margaret: The guy had a gun for cripes sake and unless he was deaf or didn't understand English when the cops told him to drop it, there was no other alternative but to use "deadly force" in taking this guy down to avoid others getting hurt or killed. He might have been "good" at some point in his life--even right up to the time he lost it last night but don't blame the PD for protecting the public by shooting an armed man. According to the news on Fox10. The couple appeared to be "White". I've seen this on tv including the neighbors who were interviewed. This is an all white neighborhood along Mckellips near Power Rd. where my buddy lives.......typical in these sorts of hoods. Well what else can we say? The White guy refused to obey orders.
