Police offer free services at event

The Scottsdale police and fire departments are joining forces on Saturday in a free public safety event for residents.
Among the crime prevention and safety services police will provide include child fingerprinting and photographing for parents, document shredding to prevent identity theft and vehicle identification number etching.
The fire department will also have five child-safety seat technicians on hand to install and inspect safety seats for children weighing up to 80 pounds, said Lori Schmidt, public education officer for the Scottsdale Fire Department.
All the services are free, and officers conducting VIN etchings will inscribe the number on the perimeter of every window on the vehicle at no charge, said Jason Glenn, Scottsdale police crime prevention officer.
“At the last event, there were 98 VIN etchings,” Glenn said. “This time, we’d like to do more than 100 vehicles.”
Residents who need to have documents shredded to help prevent identity theft can bring up to five boxes of documents.
“It’s a worthwhile event where residents can have some valuable services done for free that you would have to pay for otherwise,” Glenn said.
The Scottsdale Fire Department will also have an engine truck available for kids to see and firefighters on hand to answer questions.
But the child car seat installations and inspections are the most important feature the fire department will offer during the event, Schmidt said.
About 85 percent of child car seats are installed incorrectly, according to national statistics, Schmidt said.
The Scottsdale Fire Department installs about 60 to 80 car seats per month by appointment, and Saturday will be a good opportunity to have it done without having to schedule one, Schmidt said.
“It’s very important to make sure your child is strapped in their car safety seat,” Schmidt said. “They could save your child’s life.”
The event will take place from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday in the parking lot of Target, 15444 N. Frank Lloyd Wright Blvd.
