Warren Pineo, a minitour player from Palm Desert, Calif., took a one-shot lead following Wednesday’s second round of the first-stage PGA Tour qualifier being played on the new Champions Course at the TPC Scottsdale.
Pineo posted a 4-under-par 67 to go with an opening 64.
He was at 11-under 131, a shot clear of former Nationwide Tour players Boyd Summerhays and Greg Bruckner. Hays, who hails from Utah, shot 68, while Phoenix’s Bruckner had the day’s best round — a 65.
Scoring was much higher in Round 2 than Round 1, which produced four 64s.
Also in the thick of the 72-hole chase from the East Valley was Jesse Mueller.
The former Arizona State All-American from Mesa shot a 69 and was tied for sixth place at 8 under.
Another shot back were Bret Guetz of Scottsdale, who shot 68, and Mesa’s Charlie Beljan, a former U.S. Junior Amateur champion, with a 69.
The first-stage qualifier is being held at the renovated TPC Scottsdale Champions Course, formerly the TPC Desert Course, due to last week’s fires in Southern California.
The top 25 players and ties will advance to second-stage play in two weeks.
