The Champions Course at the TPC Scottsdale christened its new 18 holes on Tuesday with the first round of a first-stage PGA Tour qualifier that was moved to Arizona due to fire last week at the original site in Santee, Calif.

Three Californians — Brendan Steele, Travis Johnson and Warren Pineo — joined former Nationwide Tour player Boyd Summerhays atop the leaderboard at 7-under 64. One shot back was former Arizona State standout Jesse Mueller of Mesa. The tournament still has three days and 54 holes to go.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

• Arizona State junior guard Briann January was named to the preseason All-Pac-10 team.
