A state-of-the-art cancer treatment and research center will be built near Mercy Gilbert Medical Center.

Ironwood Cancer and Research Centers is scheduled to open its third East Valley location in Gilbert by early 2009. It has centers near Chandler Regional Hospital and Banner Baywood Medical Center in Mesa.

“This will be our largest center,” said Elizabeth Mueller, administrator of Ironwood Cancer and Research Centers. “This will help with travel for some patients, and over time we expect the Gilbert area to grow considerably and have a need for this type of care.”

The two-story facility will offer chemotherapy, radiology oncology and diagnostic services.

“We are the only and first comprehensive cancer center that’s going to be in Gilbert,” said Dr. Parvinderjit Khanuja, Ironwood’s president. “We already have state-of-the-art facilities, and we can bring it home to the people in Gilbert.”

Ironwood is the only cancer treatment provider in Arizona with Image Guided Radiation Therapy, Khanuja said. It increases radiation treatment accuracy to minimize side effects.

People won’t have to travel and can get cutting edge treatment right in their backyard,” he said.

Ironwood’s medical staff includes 11 medical oncologists and four radiation oncologists between the two centers, Mueller said. Ironwood also has a cancer research program, and patients can enroll in various studies, Mueller said.
