Newly selected ambassador has Arizona ties

Mark Flatten, Tribune

Lobbyist and former Arizona Republican Party Chairman Robert Fannin was confirmed Friday as the new ambassador to the Dominican Republic.

Fannin was nominated by President Bush in January.

Fannin is a partner in the law firm Steptoe & Johnson, where he specializes in government relations.

The son of Paul Fannin, a former Arizona governor and senator, he was chairman of the state Republican Party from 2001 until 2005.

Fannin was not available Friday for comment. In a statement to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in September, he said he will draw on his experience as a lawyer, former military officer and member of nonprofit civic organizations to represent American interests in the Dominican Republic.
