Man killed by Phoenix police during standoff

Phoenix police on Tuesday shot and killed a man who they say tried to ram a van out of a garage where he had been holed up.
Detective Bob Ragsdale, Phoenix police spokesman, said the man is described as a white male in his 40s.
Police were still trying to identify him.
Ragsdale said in an e-mail that the incident began about 10:30 p.m. Monday when officers began following a red Saturn that was missing a license plate in the area of 28th Street and East Marilyn Road.
The driver bailed out in the 14400 block of North 28th Way and fired a shot at officers who were chasing him.
No one was struck as they continued to chase him through yards and over walls.
The suspect made his way to a house with an open garage, where officers fired shots at him before he got the garage door down.
One of the home’s residents was outside investigating the disturbance, but two remained inside.
Police got the other occupants out of the house safely.
A SWAT unit checked the home and found the suspect was still in the garage.
Negotiators broke a garage window to throw in a communications system, at which time the man opened fire and began to ram the van into police vehicles that were parked in the driveway.
Two officers returned fire. The man was pronounced dead at a local hospital, Ragsdale said.
Investigators found keys in the van and a semiautomatic handgun.
