John Elway's son commits to ASU

Jack Elway, quarterback at Cherry Creek High School in suburban Denver, has committed to play at Arizona State, the Rocky Mountain News reported on Saturday.

Elway is the son of Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway. He has thrown for 1,677 yards, 21 touchdowns and three interceptions this year.

“Arizona State has been recruiting me for a few months, but only recently have things become serious with them,” the 6-foot-3, 200-pound quarterback told DevilsDigest.com earlier this month.

“They’re a great football team, and they’re close to home. I enjoyed watching the way they run their offense.”

The younger Elway and his father were among a group of recruits who visited ASU last week, when the Sun Devils improved to 7-0 with a victory against Washington.

ASU coach Dennis Erickson has ties with the Elway family. He was an assistant under Jack Elway Sr., John’s father, at San Jose State from 1979-81.

Jack Elway was being recruited by safeties coach Matt Lubick, whose father, Colorado State coach Sonny Lubick, worked under Jack Elway Sr. at Stanford.

The Sun Devils currently have four quarterbacks on scholarship: junior starter Rudy Carpenter, sophomore backup Danny Sullivan and freshmen Chasen Stangel and Samson Szakacsy, who are both redshirting this season.

Louisiana State, Oregon and Stanford were among the other schools recruiting Elway, who is the Sun Devils’ ninth known commitment in the 2008 class.
