Juan Martinez homered during a four-run third as second-seeded Oral Roberts beat No. 3 Cal Poly 13-3 Friday in the first round of the NCAA Tempe Regional at Packard Stadium.
Oral Roberts (32-13) advances to a Saturday winner’s bracket game against either Arizona State or Kent State. Cal Poly (37-20) faces elimination on Saturday against the late game loser.
Eagles starter Jerry Sullivan (8-3) allowed 11 hits over seven innings, but other than a two-run triple in the fifth, pitched out of trouble all afternoon.
Martinez was 3-for-5 but his 15th home run of the season, leading off the third was one of three in the inning. Seth Furmanek hit his team-leading 16th homer immediately after Martinez and Cody Price added a two-run shot to give the Eagles a 6-1 lead. Furmanek had three hits, driving in two, and Michael Notaro went 4-for-4, one of them a double and drove in two runs. Price added a three-run double in the eighth.
Mustangs starter Mason Radeke (6-2) gave up six runs on 10 hits in 4 2/3 innings, giving up single runs in the first two innings.
Oral Roberts is making its 12th consecutive NCAA tournament appearance while Cal Poly is making its first postseason showing.
