WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama will welcome the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury to the White House next week in recognition of the team's 2009 championship season.

The White House announced the visit Tuesday.

The Mercury defeated the Indiana Fever last year in five games to win its second WNBA championship in three years. Obama will honor the Mercury at an event Monday afternoon.
