Will Dennis Parker go or will he stay at Mesa High School? There are three possible destinations for the current Jackrabbits football coach — Brownsville, Texas; Seguin, Texas; or Mesa.
Parker’s answer will come Monday after he and his wife, Mary, return from San Antonio where Parker is talking this weekend with officials about the vacant coaching position at Texas Lutheran University in Seguin, a Division III school 35 miles east of San Antonio.
On Wednesday, the Brownsville Herald in Brownsville, Texas, reported that Parker had been hired as the new football coach and athletic director at Porter High School. The paper said the Brownsville Independent School District Board of Trustees gave approval to hire Parker at a school board meeting.
But Parker said Thursday he left Brownsville and its district officials with the clear understanding that he had not accepted the job as coach and athletic director.
“If it was convenient for them to get approval for hiring me early, that was up to them,” Parker said. “I gave them no guarantee I was accepting the job. It’s one possibility I’m considering.
“Come Sunday, when we get back, my wife and I will talk about all of it. I told (Mesa High principal) Pete (Lesar) I would let him know what we decided on Monday.”
Parker has been the coach at Mesa High for three years. The Jackrabbits have posted a 15-16 record in his tenure. They were 3-7 in 2004, 5-5 in 2005 and 7-4 this past season.
They qualified for the playoffs this season for the first time since 2000.
