Tim Esmay has been chosen as the interim baseball coach for Arizona State for the 2010 season.

He replaces Pat Murphy, who resigned on Nov. 20.

Esmay was an assistant on Murphy's staff beginning in 2005 but was let go in June. He has previous head coaching experience, compiling a 213-235-1 record in eight seasons at Utah.

Esmay played for Arizona State in 1986 and 1987 and was an assistant under coach Jim Brock in two separate stints.

"He brings a wealth of ASU familiarity to our current team as well as significant head coaching experience," athletic director Lisa Love said.

It's unknown whether former Washington coach Ken Knutson will remain on the staff. He was expected to be a candidate for the interim position.

Love is expected to conduct a national search for a long-term headcoach once the interim staff is in place.

Esmay played at Scottsdale Horizon High School and Scottsdale Community College before his time as a Sun Devil. Esmay has also coached Phoenix Brophy Prep and Grand Canyon University.
