Daron Sutton, the top candidate to replace Thom Brennaman as the Diamondbacks’ TV voice, told Milwaukee that he will not return in 2007, enabling him to explore an option in Arizona.
Sutton, son of Hall of Fame right-hander Don Sutton, has been a member of the Brewers’ TV crew for the past five seasons.
“There are several opportunities that have been presented to me recently, and I believe the time is right to pursue those interests,” Sutton said in a prepared statement.
The D-Backs concluded interviews for their hitting coach Tuesday and expect to make their choice — either Dave Hudgens, Rick Schu or Kevin Seitzer — this week.
General manager Josh Byrnes and manager Bob Melvin also spoke to former D-Backs third base coach Chris Speier about rejoining the team in the same capacity, a hire that would make Chip Hale the bench coach in 2007, but are at least a week away from that decision.
Speier, the D-Backs’ third-base coach in the 2001 World Series season, has spent the last two seasons as the Chicago Cubs’ third-base coach but is not expected to return on new manager Lou Piniella’s staff. Speier spent 1996-99 as a manager in the D-Backs’ organization.
