The Arizona Rattlers have called a press conference for 11:30 a.m. Thursday at America West Arena to announce the signing of Todd Shell as the team's new head coach.
Shell replaces Danny White, who was fired last month after 13 seasons, a 121-55 record and two ArenaBowl titles as the team's only head coach.
Shell, who is from Mesa and attended Mountain View High School, was the Rattlers’ original defensive coordinator from 1992-94 under White.
He was also the original coach of the San Jose SaberCats where he made the playoffs in three of his four seasons. Most recently, he coached the New York Dragons to a 9-7 record in 2004, just missing the postseason.
Shell's contract with New York was due to expire in September, but he was able to work out a settlement with the Dragons. As for White, he has been contacted both by the Las Vegas and Grand Rapids franchises, and talks with Grand Rapids included discussions about a contract and the Rampage’s roster.
White is expected to make a decision about his immediate future by next week.
