The Gilbert Tigers were the last team standing at the end of the Volleyball Tournament of Champions on Saturday at Westwood High School.
Led by senior Jen Christian's nine kills and two blocks, the Tigers defeated Glendale Mountain Ridge, 25-16, 25-18.
"Our defense played really well, and all around we had a solid day," Christian said.
The Mountain Lions got to the finals following an impressive victory over talented Phoenix Xavier. In the final, Mountain Ridge's talent was overmatched by the bigger, stronger Tigers.
"It's nice to win a tournament against a good team," said Gilbert coach Joe Hesse.
"Mountain Ridge is very good and they came out fired up, so we're happy to win, definitely."
The Tigers took control of the first game early with a 17-11 lead. Christian served up an ace late in the match, and her teammates responded with a high level of intensity.
Whitney Webb and Jessica Elley added nine kills and three blocks for Gilbert in Game 1. The second game proved to be more competitive as the Mountain Lions matched points with the Tigers, playing to a 15-15 tie before the second timeout. The Tigers regrouped, coming out of the timeout and took away the Mountain Lions' momentum.
Behind seniors Stacey Ray and Jessica Endres, the Tigers were able to outscore the Mountain Lions, 10-3, to end the match.
"We only have one goal (a state championship), and it's the same every year and it doesn't change," Hesse said.
