East Valley briefs: Three honored for work in golf

Amateur champion Tina Huiskamp, former Southwest Section PGA president Mack McCarley and former AGA president William “Bill” Rodie have been selected as the 2007 inductees into the Arizona Golf Hall of Fame and will be formally inducted in a ceremony that will take place on Jan. 14 at Arizona Country Club in Phoenix.

The honor recognizes individuals for service to the game of the golf in the state and is spearheaded by the Arizona Golf Association (AGA), Southwest Section of the PGA (SWSPGA), Arizona Women’s Golf Association (AWGA) and the Cactus and Pine Golf Course Superintendent’s Association of Arizona (CPGCSA).

GOLF

• The TPC Scottsdale and Arizona Golf Association announced the selection of the newly redesigned Champions Course as annual host of the Arizona Stroke Play Championship.

One of four major championships conducted annually by the Association, the Stroke Play Championship will be held April 16-19 and will feature a 144-player field.

HOCKEY

• Chris Stevens tallied the equalizer at 13:02 of the third period and Thatcher Bell scored the game-winner in the second round of the shootout to lift the Phoenix RoadRunners to a 5-4 victory over the Las Vegas Wranglers in the Midnight Holiday Round-Up early Tuesday morning in Las Vegas.

WRESTLING

• The Arizona State wrestling team placed 11th overall at the Reno Tournament of Champions Tuesday in Reno, Nev. The Sun Devils had three individuals place in the top five of their weight classes — Jason Trulson (second at 197), Patrick Pitsch (fourth at 165) and Chris Drouin (fifth at 141).
