Arizona State has received an oral commitment from junior college shooting guard Steve Moore.
Moore, from Los Angeles, was in the Valley on an official recruiting visit last weekend. He was with the team Sunday at Wells Fargo Arena when it learned it had received an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament.
He shared in the celebration Sunday night at coach Rob Evans' house.
The 6-foot-4, 205-pound Moore transferred to Eastern Oklahoma State College in Wilburton, Okla., this season after starring at Santa Ana College in California.
At Santa Ana, Moore was the sixth-leading scorer in the California community colleges.
He averaged 23.3 points on 43.2 percent shooting. He made 39.6 percent of his 3-point attempts and 75.6 percent of his free throws.
Like his recruiting host, Curtis Millage, Moore is a left-handed shooter.
In Basketball Times' preseason junior college ratings he was listed as the 17th-best prospect.
MILLAGE KEY FACTOR
Evans said that in the NCAA tournament, guard play is the key to success.
Millage has given his coach reason to believe the Devils can have success because of his recent play.
"Curtis has stepped up his game tremendously," said Evans, who believes Millage was playing as well as any backcourt player in the Pac-10 at season's end.
In the last eight games, Millage has averaged 21.6 points. He's shot 91.3 percent from the foul line.
Millage said the NCAA tournament means something to him only because it validates the hard work the seniors put into the program over the past four years.
"I'm blessed to have come in here and helped them get where they wanted to be," he said.
As for himself, he characterized all this NCAA business as "just another day at the office."
ASU has been allotted 550 tickets for the NCAA tournament. Only season-ticket holders can purchase the tickets, priced at $40. Oklahoma City officials announced the games are officially sold out. Additional tickets will become available if the eight teams return any tickets.
The Sun Devils practice in the morning today then board a plane for Oklahoma City in the afternoon. The team is headquartered at the Holiday Inn-Broadway Extension, phone number (405) 843-5558.
